The story on this card
This team card reports the Cubs' 1966 season, a last-place finish at 59-103, 36 games behind the pennant winner. Leo Durocher took over as manager that year, ending the club's College of Coaches experiment. The roster carried a young core that would soon turn the franchise around: Ron Santo won a Gold Glove and made the All-Star team at third base, Ernie Banks anchored first base, and Billy Williams patrolled the outfield. Fergie Jenkins, acquired from the Phillies that April along with Adolfo Phillips and John Herrnstein for Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl, began building his rotation credentials. Robin Roberts, released by Houston and picked up by the Cubs in July, closed out his Hall of Fame career on the staff. The card is number 354 in Topps' 1967 series, print series 4, picturing the club in a posed team photo.
