1967 Topps #8 Chuck Harrison

About Chuck Harrison
This 1967 Topps card catches Harrison with the Astros for what proved his final season in Houston, an early-series issue from the set's first print run. He appeared in 70 games backing up first base that year as Doug Rader's emergence pushed him out of the everyday lineup, and that off-season Houston traded him to the Atlanta Braves along with Sonny Jackson.
Chuck Harrison spent parts of five big league seasons as a first baseman, breaking in with the Houston Astros in 1965 out of Abilene, Texas, and Texas Tech University, having signed with the Houston Colt .45s organization in 1963. A right-handed hitter and thrower, he was known more for sure hands around the bag than for pop, finishing his run with a .991 fielding percentage. His best all-around season came in 1966, when he set career highs in games, average, runs and RBI while holding down first base for the Astros. He lost his everyday job in 1967 as Doug Rader emerged, and that winter Houston sent him to the Atlanta Braves in a deal that also included Sonny Jackson, bringing back Denny Lemaster and Denis Menke. He never appeared for Atlanta; the Kansas City Royals purchased his contract and he closed out his career there in 1969 and 1971. Over five seasons Harrison batted .238 with 17 home runs and 126 RBI in 328 games. He died in 2023 at age 82.
