1969 Topps #48 Brant Alyea

About Brant Alyea
By 1969 Alyea had become a regular in the Senators outfield under new manager Ted Williams, playing a career-high 104 games and posting 11 home runs and 40 RBIs as a corner outfielder, with occasional time at first base. His 1969 Topps card, from the set's first print series, reflects that breakout season just before Washington traded him to Minnesota the following spring.
Brant Alyea was a power-hitting outfielder who spent six seasons in the majors with the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. Signed by Cincinnati out of Hofstra, where he had also starred in basketball, he was drafted away by Washington and made his major-league debut in September 1965, homering on the first pitch of his first big-league at-bat. He became a regular Senators outfielder in 1968-69, then had his best season for Minnesota in 1970, hitting .291 with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs before going hitless in the Twins' ALCS loss to Baltimore that fall. Injuries and a drop in production limited his final two seasons with Oakland and St. Louis. Alyea was also a standout in Venezuelan winter ball, twice leading the league in home runs. After baseball he worked at an Atlantic City casino and later at a car dealership near Philadelphia.
