About Norm Miller

1969 Topps #76 captures Norm Miller with the Houston Astros in the set's first series. It was the busiest season of his career: he appeared in 119 games, batting .264 with 4 home runs, 50 RBI and 58 runs, playing the outfield in 114 of those games for Houston. That same 1969 season with the Astros also turns up in teammate Jim Bouton's memoir Ball Four, a recollection that adds to the card's context as one of Miller's fuller campaigns before a back injury cut his career short in 1974.

Norm Miller, born Norman Calvin Miller in Los Angeles, California, played outfield in the majors from 1965 to 1974 for the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves. Signed out of Van Nuys High School by the Los Angeles Angels as a second baseman, he was taken by Houston in the 1964 Rule 5 draft and converted to the outfield. He reached the majors in 1965 as one of the youngest players in the National League and spent most of his career with the Astros before a 1973 trade to Atlanta for Cecil Upshaw. Over 540 games Miller collected 325 hits. He scored the winning run in the Astros' famous 1-0, 24-inning marathon against the New York Mets in 1968. His 1969 season is remembered in teammate Jim Bouton's memoir Ball Four. A back injury shortened his career; he retired at 28 and later worked in the Astros' front office and as a sports radio host. He was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
