About Billy Maloney

William Alphonse "Billy" Maloney (1878-1960) was a Deadball Era outfielder and one of the game's early "college boys," reaching the majors after graduating from Georgetown. He broke in with the American League's Milwaukee club in 1901, appearing in 72 of his 86 games behind the plate as a catcher before shifting to the outfield. Stops with St. Louis and Cincinnati (1902) and strong minor-league play at Kansas City and Minneapolis earned him a return to the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1905 under manager Frank Selee. That was his finest season: he batted .260 with 78 runs in 145 games and stole 59 bases to tie Art Devlin for the National League stolen-base title. A slick-fielding, speedy but light-hitting player, he spent 1906-1908 with the Brooklyn Superbas, then finished in the minors, including Rochester of the Eastern League, the team shown on his T206 card. Over six big-league seasons he hit .236 with 585 hits and 155 stolen bases in 696 games. This 350-only Rochester card makes him one of the set's more obscure minor-league subjects; he was never elected to the Hall of Fame.
