About Charley Carr
Charles Carbitt "Charley" Carr (1875-1932), a first baseman from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, broke into pro ball in 1895, switching from catcher to first base after his throwing arm gave out. He debuted in the majors with the 1898 Washington Senators and later played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1901), Detroit Tigers (1903-04), Cleveland Naps (1904-05), Cincinnati Reds (1906), and, in the Federal League, the 1914 Indianapolis Hoosiers. Over seven big-league seasons he batted .252 with 493 hits and 240 RBI, his best year coming with Detroit in 1903 (.281, 11 triples). Carr is best remembered as player-manager of the Indianapolis Indians of the American Association (1906-1910), guiding the 1908 club to the pennant at 92-61 while hitting .301, and famously signing future Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Marquard. His T206 card, part of the scarcer minor-league "350 Only" subject group, depicts him during his Indianapolis managerial days. He later ran a sporting-goods firm and died suddenly in 1932.
