About Jack Hayden
John Francis "Jack" Hayden (1880-1942), a Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, native who had starred at football for the University of Pennsylvania, broke into pro ball around Chester and the Atlantic League before Connie Mack signed him to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901. A left-handed-hitting, left-throwing outfielder, he was a career reserve in the majors, appearing in only 147 games across three seasons — the 1901 Athletics, the 1906 Boston Americans, and the 1908 Chicago Cubs — batting .251 with 145 hits and a single home run. His real success came in the minors, where he compiled roughly a .288 average over eleven seasons for clubs including the Baltimore Orioles (Eastern League) and the Indianapolis Indians. In 1908 he led the American Association in hits (186), doubles, triples, and batting average (.316) as Indianapolis won the pennant under manager Charles Carr, then hit .273 and .278 for the Indians in 1909-1910. He later managed Louisville (1912-1915) and, an early two-sport man, played pro football (Massillon). No Hall of Fame; Hayden is one of the T206 set's many obscure common subjects.
