About J. Ross Helm
James Ross Helm was a right-handed pitcher and a career minor leaguer who never appeared in the major leagues, which is typical of the T206 set's "Southern Leaguer" subjects. Born June 10, 1884 in Alabama, Helm spent roughly a dozen seasons in the low minors between the mid-1900s and 1914, working mainly in the South Atlantic League, the Southern Association, and the Texas League. He broke through with strong South Atlantic League campaigns — 18-13 for the Macon Brigands in 1907 and 11-4 for the Jacksonville Jays in 1908 — the results that likely earned his inclusion in the tobacco set. In 1909, the season tied to his card, he went 18-12 split between the Columbus Foxes and the Chattanooga Lookouts. He later logged four Texas League seasons (1911-1914) with clubs such as Galveston, Houston, Waco, and Austin, finishing with a documented minor-league record of about 143-181 before retiring. Helm died June 19, 1962 in Holmes County, Florida. Because he was a Columbus/Southern-league player rather than a big-leaguer, his T206 card is among the set's scarcer and more sought-after Southern Leaguer issues.
