About Charlie Fritz
Charles Cornelius "Charlie" Fritz was a deadball-era left-handed pitcher, born June 13, 1882, in Mobile, Alabama, where he apprenticed at an iron foundry and pitched sandlot ball, going a perfect 12-0 for the Brewton Invincibles in 1902 before turning pro. He spent his entire career in the minors from 1903 to 1914, working through the Cotton States, South Atlantic, and Southern Association circuits with stops at Memphis, Greenville, Vicksburg, Columbia, and Shreveport. He is best remembered with the New Orleans Pelicans (1907-09, 1912) and Memphis (1909-11) of the Class A Southern Association—the league that made him a T206 "Southern Leaguer" subject. His lone major-league appearance came October 5, 1907, when he started for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics against Washington and threw three hitless innings in a no-decision, after which Mack judged him "not major-league caliber." Fritz's highlights include a 15-strikeout, 12-inning, 4-1 win over Memphis on August 7, 1907, and a career-best 17-16 record with seven shutouts in 1910, twice besting ace Harry Coveleski by 1-0 scores in five days. He finished 116-153 in the minors and never reached the majors again, dying in Mobile on July 30, 1943.
