About Dick Rudolph
Dick Rudolph, born in New York City in 1887, pitched at Fordham University before turning professional and starring for the Toronto club of the Eastern (later International) League from about 1907 to 1912, where he twice won more than 20 games and led the league in victories. The T206 card captures him during that Toronto tenure, before his major-league fame. After a brief look with the New York Giants (1910-1911), the right-hander became the ace of the Boston Braves (1913-1927). A small, cerebral craftsman who relied on a sharp curve and pinpoint control rather than speed, Rudolph anchored the 1914 "Miracle Braves," who climbed from last place in July to the National League pennant. He won 26 games that season, including 12 straight, then pitched complete-game victories in Games 1 and 4 as Boston stunned Connie Mack's Athletics in a four-game World Series sweep. Rudolph finished with a 121-108 record and a 2.66 career ERA, posting a career-best 2.16 ERA in 1916. He died in the Bronx in 1949.
