About Doc Casey
James Patrick "Doc" Casey was a switch-hitting third baseman whose T206 card captures him as player-manager of the Montreal Royals of the Eastern League, where the set found him in 1908-1909. Born March 15, 1870, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Casey studied dentistry at Baltimore Medical College before leaving in 1892 to play for Pawtucket in the New England League; the nickname "Doc" stuck because he used his dental training to help teammates with their teeth. He reached the majors in 1898 and played ten seasons (through 1907) for the Washington Senators, Brooklyn Superbas, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago Cubs, batting .258 with 1,122 hits, 9 home runs, 354 RBIs, and 191 stolen bases in the deadball era. He anchored the hot corner for the 1899 pennant-winning Superbas and served as the Cubs' third baseman from 1903 to 1905 alongside the "Tinker to Evers to Chance" infield. After baseball he ran a Detroit drugstore that became a hot-stove-league gathering spot and scouted for the Tigers; he died December 31, 1936. Not a Hall of Famer, he is a common but characterful minor-league subject in the T206 set.
