About Dom Mullaney
Dominic Joseph "Dom" Mullaney was born November 9, 1873, in Louisville, Kentucky, and made his living in the minor leagues of the Deep South rather than the majors. A first baseman, he played and managed across the Southern circuits in the early 1900s and is best remembered as the skipper of the Jacksonville franchise. In 1908 he managed the Jacksonville club to the South Atlantic League pennant with a 77-34 record, the city's first professional championship, and he was still running the team when Southern Leaguers were added to the T206 set. He later managed elsewhere in the low minors, including a stint in the Cotton States League. Mullaney's only appearance in the major leagues came not as a player but as an American League umpire in 1915, when he worked 36 games. He settled in Jacksonville and died there August 21, 1964. Within T206, Mullaney belongs to the scarcer "Southern Leaguer" subset (printed only in 1909-1910), and his card is famous for the extraordinary "Mullaney overprint" printing-error variety prized by collectors.
