About George Paige
Card #376 pictures George Lynn "Pat" Paige (1882-1939), a right-handed pitcher born in Paw Paw, Michigan, where he starred at the local high school before turning pro. He signed with Louisville of the American Association in February 1905 and spent a decade (1905-1914) bouncing through the minors, including Denver, Norfolk, New Orleans and Atlanta. His T206 card honors his time with Charleston of the South Atlantic League (1907-1909): he went 11-8 with nine shutouts in 1908, and on May 28, 1909, he hurled a 5-0 no-hitter against Macon, prompting Sporting Life to call him the best pitcher in the league. His finest year came with New Orleans in 1910, when he went 24-14 with eight shutouts and threw a seven-inning 1-0 no-hitter against Mobile. He reached the majors briefly with the 1911 Cleveland Naps, going 1-0 in two games (winning his debut 8-4 over Washington) but never sticking; his career minor-league mark was 116-117. Nicknamed "Piggy," Paige is one of the set's obscure, scarcer Southern League subjects. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
