About Fred Parent

Born in Biddeford, Maine, in 1875, Fred Parent broke into pro ball with New Haven of the Connecticut League in 1898 and reached the majors after signing with the Boston Americans in March 1901. A sturdy 5-foot-5 right-handed hitter, he became Boston's regular shortstop and a spark of its early dynasty, hitting .306 as a rookie and anchoring the infield alongside Hobe Ferris. Parent starred on the Americans' back-to-back American League pennant winners of 1903 and 1904, batting .304 with 17 triples in 1903, and helped Boston win the first modern World Series that October, outhitting Honus Wagner across the eight games. Nicknamed the "Flying Frenchman" for his French-Canadian roots and quick, hustling style, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox after 1907 and played there through 1911. Over a 12-season big-league career he was a .262 hitter with 1,306 hits, chiefly at shortstop. Later coaching a young Babe Ruth in the minors, Parent died in 1972 at age 96 as the last surviving player from the 1903 World Series.
