About Harry Arndt

Harry John Arndt (1879-1921), a South Bend, Indiana native, was a right-handed second baseman and outfielder who reached the majors on July 2, 1902 with Ty Cobb's future club, the Detroit Tigers, before finishing that season with the American League's Baltimore Orioles. After a strong 1904 (.309 for the American Association's Louisville Colonels) earned him a return to the big leagues, he spent parts of 1905-1907 with the National League St. Louis Cardinals, his best year coming in 1905 (101 hits, .243). Across four MLB seasons he was a modest deadball-era hitter, batting .248 with 244 hits, 6 home runs and 99 RBIs in 271 games. His final major-league appearance came May 25, 1907. Arndt then played on for several more seasons in the minors, chiefly with the Providence Grays of the Eastern League - the team pictured on his T206 card - and later managed in the low minors before retiring in 1913. In 1906 he served as Notre Dame's head baseball coach. He died of tuberculosis in 1921. In the T206 set Arndt is a common, minor-league subject rather than a scarce star; no documented nickname survives for him.
