About Herbie Moran
John Herbert "Herbie" Moran, born February 16, 1884 in Costello, Pennsylvania, was a speedy dead-ball-era outfielder who turned pro in 1905 with the Class D Coudersport Giants. A left-handed hitter who threw right, he reached the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1908 and, over seven big-league seasons through 1915, also played for the Boston Doves/Braves, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds, batting .242 with just two home runs. His T206 card places him with Providence of the Eastern League, where in 1909 he hit .268, stole 58 bases, and led the league with 92 runs over 154 games. Standing only about 5-foot-5, he was nicknamed "Little Herbie" for his small stature and was prized for superb fielding, a strong arm, and daring baserunning. Acquired by George Stallings' "Miracle" Braves in August 1914, Moran was a platoon regular on that stunning pennant winner; in Game Three of the World Series sweep of the A's, his 12th-inning sacrifice bunt was fumbled to force in the winning run — the first walk-off error in Series history. He later managed in the minors for years and died in 1954.
