About Jake Stahl

Garland "Jake" Stahl was born April 13, 1879, in Elkhart, Illinois, and starred in baseball and football at the University of Illinois, where he also earned a law degree in 1903. Boston Americans owner Henry Killilea signed him off the college field that spring, and Stahl broke in as a rookie catcher on Boston's 1903 club before settling in as a first baseman. Over nine big-league seasons (1903-1913) he played for Boston, Washington, the Chicago White Sox, and the New York Highlanders, batting .261 with 894 hits, 31 home runs, and 178 stolen bases. His signature season came in 1910, when he led the American League with 10 home runs (many inside-the-park at Huntington Avenue Grounds) while driving in 77 runs. His fraternity brothers had tagged him "Jake." Stahl's greatest triumph came as player-manager: he piloted the 1912 Red Sox to a franchise-best 105-47 record and beat John McGraw's Giants in the World Series. He soon retired for a banking career and died of tuberculosis in 1922 at age 43.
