About Tom Guiheen

Thomas Aloysius Guiheen (born December 27, 1882, in Brattleboro, Vermont) was a career minor-league infielder who never reached the major leagues; his T206 card belongs to the set's "Southern Leaguer"/minor-league subjects rather than its big-league stars. A second baseman who also played third, he broke in as an 18-year-old with Bangor of the New England League in 1901, then spent most of the 1900s in that Class B circuit — with Dover, Brockton/New Bedford, Fall River and Lynn — through 1908. That year he joined Portsmouth of the Class C Virginia League, the club pictured on his card, and played there in 1908-1910 before the franchise relocated to Petersburg in mid-1910; he stayed with Petersburg into 1911. He also served as a player-manager during these years, posting a 16-5 record with Portsmouth and Suffolk (1909-1911). He later hit .340 for Danbury in 1913 and .331 in 1914, and last appeared with Wellsville in 1916. Over 14 seasons he batted roughly .251 with about 1,009 hits and 17 home runs. Guiheen died young, at 35, on October 17, 1918, in Springfield, Massachusetts.
