About Pat McCauley
Patrick F. McCauley (June 10, 1870, Ware, Massachusetts - January 17, 1917, Hoboken, New Jersey) was a catcher whose long professional career unfolded almost entirely in the minor leagues. A right-handed thrower, he bounced through the New England and Western circuits in the 1890s and reached the majors only in brief spells: the St. Louis Browns (1893), the Washington Senators (1896), and the New York Highlanders (1903). Across those three cups of coffee - his debut came September 5, 1893, and his final big-league game September 3, 1903 - he managed just 23 hits and a .193 average with 3 home runs and 12 RBI. His true home was the minors, where he caught for a string of clubs including the Portsmouth Truckers of the Virginia League in the game's Southern reaches. It is that late-career stint that earned him a spot in the T206 set's "Southern Leaguer" subset, the group of Southern-circuit players that makes McCauley an obscure but genuine part of the most famous of all tobacco-card issues. He is not a Hall of Famer, and no documented nickname survives.
