About Moose McCormick

Harry Elwood "Moose" McCormick was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who became one of the earliest pinch-hitting specialists in big-league history. A college athlete at Bucknell, he turned pro with Jersey City in 1903 and reached the majors in 1904 with John McGraw's New York Giants, who prized his education; he split that rookie year between the Giants and Pittsburgh, then returned to New York (1908-09, 1912-13) with a 1908 stop in Philadelphia. Over parts of six seasons he batted .285, and McGraw, noting his lack of speed, made him a pinch hitter, a role in which he hit roughly .301. His most famous moment came September 23, 1908, when he appeared to score the winning run against the Cubs, only for Fred Merkle's failure to touch second base ("Merkle's Boner") to nullify it and help cost the Giants the pennant. Nicknamed "Moose" for his sturdy build as a schoolboy at Girard College, he later coached baseball at Bucknell and West Point (1925-37) and died in 1962. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
