About George McBride
George Florian McBride was born in Milwaukee in 1880 and broke into pro ball in 1901, joining his hometown Milwaukee Brewers of the young American League after starting the year with the independent Sioux Falls Canaries. A slick-fielding shortstop, he bounced through Pittsburgh (1905) and St. Louis (1905-06) before landing with the Washington Senators in 1908, where he held down shortstop for thirteen seasons through 1920 and served as field captain. McBride was widely regarded as the finest defensive shortstop of his era, leading the American League in fielding percentage five times, including four straight years from 1912 to 1915, while topping the circuit repeatedly in double plays and putouts. An iron man, he played every game in 1908, 1909, and 1911. His glove had to carry him: he hit just .218 lifetime with only seven home runs, the lowest career average of any player with 5,000-plus at-bats. Nicknamed "Pinch" for his reputation in clutch situations, McBride managed the Senators in 1921 to an 80-73 record before a ball struck him in the head during practice, causing partial facial paralysis and ending his career on the field. He died in Milwaukee in 1973 at age 92. His T206 card is a standard "350 Only" series subject.
