1909-11 T206 Clyde Milan
1909–11 T206 Clyde Milan
Washington Senators · American League · 350 Only print series
The 1909–1911 T206 Clyde Milan is part of the legendary “White Border” tobacco set — The Monster. This card depicts Clyde Milan, a member of the historic Washington Senators (American League), and was printed in the 350 Only series, known with 8 tobacco-brand backs. Across PSA and SGC, roughly 900 examples have been graded, with only 13 in NM 7 or better — a reminder of how tough this issue is in high grade.
About Clyde Milan
Clyde Milan was signed off the Kansas sandlots after Washington manager Joe Cantillon, tipped off in 1907, sent injured catcher Cliff Blankenship to buy his contract from Wichita for $1,000. The left-handed-hitting center fielder then spent his entire 16-season major-league career (1907-1922) with the Washington Senators, batting .285 with 2,100 hits. Nicknamed "Deerfoot" for his blazing speed, Milan made his name as one of the Deadball Era's premier base thieves: he led the American League in stolen bases in 1912 with 88, a modern-rules single-season record until Ty Cobb broke it in 1915, and led again in 1913 with 75. He finished with 481 career steals, third among AL players of the era behind only Cobb and Eddie Collins. Roommate and hunting companion of pitcher Walter Johnson, Milan served as Washington's player-manager in 1922 before a long coaching and minor-league managing career. He died March 3, 1953, of a heart attack at the Senators' spring-training camp in Orlando, where he was still coaching. Not a Hall of Famer, Milan is one of the T206 set's genuine Deadball stars, and this card belongs to the scarcer "350 Only" print grouping.
