About Wid Conroy

William Edward "Wid" Conroy was a speedy, versatile deadball-era infielder whose T206 card captures him with the Washington Senators, his final major-league stop. A Philadelphia-area product, he broke into pro ball in 1896 with Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and reached the majors with the Milwaukee Brewers when the American League gained big-league status in 1901. After a 1902 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates—where he backed up and briefly spelled Honus Wagner at shortstop—Conroy became an original New York Highlander (today's Yankees), starting at third base in the franchise's first home game in 1903 and anchoring the infield through 1908. Sold to Washington in 1909, he played his last three seasons there, mostly at third. Over 11 big-league years he collected 1,257 hits, 22 home runs, and a .248 average, prized for range, base-running smarts, and speed—he tied for second in AL steals in 1907 with 41, behind only Ty Cobb. His nickname traces to "Widow," reportedly for his protective, motherly interest in younger neighborhood boys. He died in 1959.
