About Bunk Congalton
William Millar "Bunk" Congalton, a left-handed-hitting outfielder born in Guelph, Ontario, in 1875, was one of the earliest Canadian-born major leaguers. He first drew notice as Guelph's rightfielder around 1894 and signed with Toronto of the Eastern League in 1895 before beginning a long, productive minor-league career. He starred at Colorado Springs, twice leading the Western League in batting (.363 in 1903, .327 in 1904). Reaching the majors at 27 with the 1902 Chicago Orphans, he later found his best big-league form with the Cleveland Naps under Nap Lajoie, batting .320 in 1906. He finished his four major-league seasons—also including the Boston Americans in 1907—with a .292 career average. On this T206 card he appears with the Columbus Senators of the American Association, where he was a durable star, averaging over 157 games a year near .300. He collapsed and died at Cleveland Stadium in 1937.
