About Bill Clymer

Bill Clymer (William Johnston Clymer, 1873-1936) was a Philadelphia-born shortstop whose major-league career was famously fleeting: he debuted for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association in June 1891 and went 0-for-11, batting .000 before disappearing from the big leagues. His real legacy lay in the minors, where he played roughly 18 seasons (1891-1906) and then became one of the deadball era's greatest bush-league managers. Over a run stretching from 1898 into 1932, Clymer piloted clubs including the Wilkes-Barre Coal Barons, Louisville Colonels, Scranton Miners, and the Columbus Senators of the American Association, the club shown on his T206 card. He amassed 2,122 managerial victories, becoming the second minor-league skipper to top 2,000 wins. Nicknamed "Derby Day Bill," he is one of the T206 set's minor-league subjects rather than a big-league star, making his card a distinctive Columbus/American Association piece prized by set collectors.
