About Josh Clark
Joshua Baldwin "Pepper" Clarke (March 8, 1879 - July 2, 1962), the younger brother of Hall of Fame manager Fred Clarke, was a left-handed-hitting outfielder whose T206 card, misspelled "Josh Clark," pictures him with the Columbus Senators of the American Association during his long minor-league run. Clarke reached the majors as a teenager, debuting June 15, 1898, with the Louisville Colonels, and later appeared for the St. Louis Cardinals (1905), Cleveland Naps (1908-09) and Boston Rustlers (1911), batting .239 over five big-league seasons. A speedy leadoff type, he enjoyed his finest year in 1908, swiping 37 bases for Cleveland. Far more productive in the minors, he hit .289 across roughly fourteen seasons and some 5,863 at-bats, later serving as Sioux City's player-manager from 1913 to 1915. As a common Columbus subject overshadowed by his Hall-of-Fame sibling, his card remains an affordable, characterful piece of the deadball-era set.
