About Jim Delehanty
James Christopher Delahanty (June 20, 1879 - October 17, 1953) was a versatile deadball-era infielder and one of the most well-traveled hitters of his time. Signed out of the Ohio minor leagues in the 1890s, he became one of five Delahanty brothers to reach the majors, though he never played alongside them. Primarily a second baseman who could man nearly any position, he suited up for eight big-league clubs over parts of thirteen seasons: the Chicago Orphans (1901), New York Giants (1902), Boston Beaneaters (1904-05), Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Browns (1906-07), Washington Senators (1907-09), Detroit Tigers (1909-12), and the Federal League Brooklyn Tip-Tops (1914-15). He hit a stout .283 across 1,186 games, peaking in 1911 with a .339 average, 184 hits, and 94 RBI. After an August 1909 trade to Detroit, he led the Tigers in the 1909 World Series, batting .346 with five doubles in all seven games of a losing effort against Pittsburgh. Nicknamed the "Yellow Kid" after a popular comic-strip character, he was overshadowed by his Hall of Fame brother Ed but earned respect as a graceful, professional hitter.
