About Bob Ganley

Bob Ganley (Robert Stephen Ganley), born April 23, 1875, in Lowell, Massachusetts, was a left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder who reached the majors after a long apprenticeship in the minor leagues, bouncing through clubs such as the New Haven Blues, Albany Senators, Brockton Shoemakers, and Columbus Senators. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 1, 1905, and played parts of five big-league seasons through 1909: with the Pirates (1905-1906), the Washington Senators (1907-1909), and finally the Philadelphia Athletics (1909). A speedy, patient leadoff-type, Ganley batted .254 over 572 games with 540 hits, 246 runs, 177 walks, and 112 stolen bases, though only 2 home runs in the deadball style. His most famous afternoon came on July 17, 1907, when he scored 5 runs in a single game as Washington routed the Detroit Tigers 13-2. He is a common, affordable subject in the T206 set, appearing with several tobacco backs. Ganley died October 9, 1945, in his native Lowell.
