About Dots Miller
John "Dots" Miller was a scrappy, versatile infielder and one of the National League's steadiest deadball-era players. A stained-glass installer from Kearny, New Jersey, he had barely broken into pro ball with Easton of the Atlantic League when the Pittsburgh Pirates purchased his contract in 1908. As a rookie in 1909 he anchored second base beside Honus Wagner, drove in 87 runs, hit .279, and helped Pittsburgh capture the National League pennant and the franchise's first World Series title, batting .250 with 4 RBIs against Ty Cobb's Tigers. The nickname "Dots" was born that year when a reporter misheard Wagner referring to "that Dutchman," transcribing it as "Dots," and it stuck for life. Miller starred at second, then first, for Pittsburgh (1909-1913) before trades sent him to the St. Louis Cardinals (1914-1917) and Philadelphia Phillies (1920-1921); in 1913 he ranked among NL leaders with 20 triples and 90 RBIs. Over 12 seasons and 1,589 games he hit .263 with 1,526 hits. Ring Lardner named him the utility man on his 1915 all-star team. Miller won a Pacific Coast League pennant managing the San Francisco Seals in 1922, but tuberculosis cut his life short in 1923 at age 36. He is one of many affordable Pirates commons in the T206 set.
