About Bump Hadley
Irving Darius "Bump" Hadley picked up his nickname as a boy in Lynn, Massachusetts, when classmates said he resembled the comic-strip character "Bumpus." A hard-throwing right-hander once compared to Walter Johnson, he signed with Clark Griffith's Washington Senators and debuted on April 20, 1926, surrendering a bases-loaded double to Babe Ruth in his first outing. Hadley pitched for Washington (1926-31, 1935), the Chicago White Sox (1932), the St. Louis Browns (1932-34), the New York Yankees (1936-40), and finished with the Giants and Athletics in 1941. Card #140 catches him with the Browns, for whom he went 15-20 in 1933 while leading the American League with 316⅔ innings pitched for a last-place club — the same year Washington, his former team, won the AL pennant. His fortunes turned with the Yankees' dynasty of 1936-39, where he won Game Three of the 1936 World Series over the Giants and shared in four straight championships. He is also remembered for a fastball that struck Tigers player-manager Mickey Cochrane in the head on May 25, 1937, fracturing his skull and ending Cochrane's playing career; Cochrane publicly absolved him of any intent. Hadley finished with a 161-165 record, a 4.24 ERA, and 1,318 strikeouts over 16 major-league seasons.
