About Carl Reynolds
Carl Nettles Reynolds was a right-handed-hitting outfielder from LaRue, Texas, born February 1, 1903. He was discovered by Chicago White Sox scouts while attending Southwestern University and left a coaching job at Lon Morris College in 1927 to turn pro, debuting with the White Sox that year. Reynolds went on to a 13-year major-league career (1927-1939) with the White Sox, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs, playing all three outfield spots but best suited to right field for his strong throwing arm. His peak season came in 1930 with the White Sox, when he hit .359 with 22 home runs, 104 RBI, and 103 runs scored. He finished his career a .302 hitter with 1,357 hits, 80 home runs, and 699 RBI over 1,222 games. Reynolds was traded to St. Louis in December 1932 in a deal that sent Goose Goslin, Fred Schulte, and Lefty Stewart to Washington, and in his 1933 season depicted on this card he batted .286 with 71 RBI and 81 runs for a last-place Browns club. He is also remembered for a violent July 4, 1932 collision at home plate in which Yankees catcher Bill Dickey broke his jaw with a punch, drawing Dickey a $1,000 fine and 30-game suspension. After retiring, Reynolds farmed in Wharton, Texas, and was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1971. He died May 29, 1978, in Houston.
