About John Kerr
John Francis Kerr, a right-handed-hitting second baseman born November 26, 1898, in San Francisco, broke into pro ball in the Pacific Coast League before debuting in the majors on May 1, 1923, with the Detroit Tigers. After two years in Detroit and several PCL seasons with Salt Lake City and Hollywood, Kerr resurfaced as the Chicago White Sox's starting second baseman in 1929, replacing Bill Hunnefield, and batted .268 with a career-high 50 RBI in 1931. That winter he was dealt to Washington with outfielder Carl Reynolds for pitchers Bump Hadley and Sam Jones and infielder Jackie Hayes. In Washington (1932-34) he served as a capable reserve infielder behind Buddy Myer and player-manager Joe Cronin. Kerr was on the Senators' 1933 pennant-winning roster and appeared in that year's World Series loss to the New York Giants, pinch-running for Fred Schulte in the tenth inning of the decisive Game 5. Over eight big-league seasons and 471 games he hit .266 with 388 hits, 6 home runs, 145 RBI and 26 stolen bases. After his final game in 1934 he managed in the minors through 1941, piloting the Vancouver Maple Leafs among other clubs, before his death in 1993 in Long Beach, California.
