About Clyde Vollmer
Clyde "Dutch the Clutch" Vollmer was a right-handed outfielder who signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1939 at age 17, breaking in with the Class-D Bassett Furniture Makers of the Bi-State League. He made a storybook major-league debut on May 31, 1942, homering on the very first pitch he saw against Pittsburgh (off Max Butcher) at Cincinnati. Over ten seasons he played for the Reds (1942, 1946-48), Washington Senators (1948-50 and 1953-54), and Boston Red Sox (1950-53), batting .251 with 508 hits, 69 home runs, and 339 RBI in 685 games. He earned his nickname during a scorching stretch in July 1951 with Boston, when his clutch hitting keyed the Red Sox amid a tight American League race; the run peaked with a three-homer game on July 26, 1951, against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park. That season produced his career bests of 22 home runs and 85 RBI. A dependable role player rather than a star, Vollmer was never an All-Star and is not in the Hall of Fame; his 1952 Topps card (#255, fifth series) carries no known error or variation. He died in 2006.
