About George Metkovich

A left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman, George "Catfish" Metkovich was signed out of California by Detroit scout Marty Krug at age 17 in 1938, then landed in the Boston Bees organization via Casey Stengel after Commissioner Landis freed 93 Tigers farmhands in 1940. He debuted with the Boston Red Sox on July 16, 1943, and over 10 major-league seasons played for six clubs: the Red Sox (1943-46), Cleveland Indians (1947), Chicago White Sox (1949), Pittsburgh Pirates (1951-53), Chicago Cubs (1953), and Milwaukee Braves (1954). He batted .261 with 934 hits, 47 home runs, and 373 RBI across 1,055 games, and though never an All-Star, he was a semi-regular right fielder on Boston's 1946 AL pennant winners, pinch-hitting in the World Series and doubling in Game 7 of the classic Series decided by Enos Slaughter's "Mad Dash." His nickname traces to a catfish that injured his foot during 1940 spring training, prompting Stengel's crack that it must have been "filet of sole." Metkovich starred in the Pacific Coast League, earning 1950 MVP honors with the Oakland Oaks (.315, 141 RBI), and was inducted into the PCL Hall of Fame in 2013. This Pirates card sits at #310, directly before the celebrated Mickey Mantle #311 that opens the scarce, valuable high-number series (#311-407) prized by collectors today.
