1952 Topps #309 Jim Busby

About Jim Busby
Jim Busby was a swift, brilliant-fielding center fielder who signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1948 after starring at Texas Christian University, where he attended on a football and track scholarship and led his conference with a .509 average in 1948. He debuted in the majors in 1950 and played 13 seasons through 1962 for the White Sox, Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Colt .45s. As a rookie in 1951 he was named an American League All-Star. His best seasons came with Washington, where he hit .312 in 1953 and .298 in 1954, drove in 80-plus runs each year, and was twice voted the Senators' most popular player. Renowned for his speed and glove, Busby repeatedly led AL outfielders in putouts and finished with a .988 career fielding mark, making only 42 errors in 3,394 chances; in July 1956 he hit grand slams in consecutive games. He batted .262 with 1,113 hits, 48 home runs, 438 RBI, and 97 stolen bases over 1,352 games, then coached in the majors into 1978. This card appears in the 1952 Topps set's Series 5, just below the scarce high-number run (#311-407)—the series that includes the famous #311 Mickey Mantle—that was printed in far smaller quantities and is prized today.
