About Luis Aloma
Luis Alomá Barba (June 19, 1923 - April 7, 1997), nicknamed "Witto," was a Cuban right-handed relief pitcher born in Havana. He signed with the Washington Senators as an amateur free agent in 1944 and worked through the minors - including a standout 1948 with the Havana Cubans (19-6, 1.77 ERA) - before being dealt to the Chicago White Sox in August 1949. Alomá spent his entire four-season major-league career with the White Sox (1950-1953), pitching almost exclusively out of the bullpen. As a 26-year-old rookie in 1950 he went 7-2 with a 3.80 ERA in 42 games, then delivered his finest year in 1951: a perfect 6-0 record with a 1.82 ERA, highlighted by a shutout over Philadelphia in the only start of his career. He finished with a sparkling 18-3 mark (an .857 winning percentage), a 3.44 ERA, 15 saves, and 115 strikeouts over 116 appearances before bursitis ended his big-league run; he pitched a final minor-league season with Memphis in 1954. Card #308 sits in the 1952 Topps fifth series, just short of the scarce high-number run that begins at #311 - the series famous for the coveted Mickey Mantle card.
