About Frank Campos
Francisco Jose Campos Lopez was a left-handed-hitting outfielder born May 11, 1924, in Havana, Cuba, one of the many Cuban players who reached the majors with the Washington Senators in the early 1950s. He played nine seasons in organized baseball and earned his call-up after a standout 1951 in which he won the Class B Tri-State League batting championship, hitting .368 with 177 hits. Campos debuted with Washington on September 11, 1951, doubling off Chicago's Howie Judson in his first big-league at-bat, and appeared in 71 games over three seasons (1951-1953), all with the Senators. He batted .279 with 41 hits, 9 doubles, 2 triples, no home runs, and 13 RBI, playing his final MLB game on May 17, 1953. Known as "Cisco" in the Cuban and Mexican winter leagues, he later settled in Miami, where he died January 28, 2006, at age 81. This 1952 Topps card (#307) is his rookie card and is best known among collectors for a copyright-line variation in which the right-hand star appears red on most copies and, more scarcely, black; it sits in the fifth series but just below the famously rare #311-407 high-number run that includes the iconic Mickey Mantle (#311).
