About Ebba St. Claire
Edward Joseph "Ebba" St. Claire was a switch-hitting catcher who threw right-handed, born and died in Whitehall, New York (August 5, 1921 – August 22, 1982). Signed as an amateur free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1942, he spent years in the minors before reaching the majors with the Boston Braves, debuting April 17, 1951. He caught for the Braves franchise in Boston (1951-52) and after its move to Milwaukee (1953), then finished with the New York Giants in 1954. He batted a career-best .282 as a rookie in 1951, and over four big-league seasons hit .249 with 112 hits, 7 home runs, and 40 RBI in 164 games. In February 1954 St. Claire was part of the notable multi-player trade that sent him, pitchers Johnny Antonelli and Don Liddle, infielder Billy Klaus, and $50,000 from Milwaukee to the Giants for Bobby Thomson and Sam Calderone. His son Randy St. Claire pitched for five MLB clubs (1984-94) and became a longtime pitching coach. This 1953 Topps card (#91) is known with a minor back printing variation, its biography text appearing in either black or white.
