About Sibby Sisti
Sebastian Daniel "Sibby" Sisti (1920-2006), a Buffalo native, was signed by the Boston Braves organization after a tryout and began his pro career with Hartford of the Class A Eastern League in 1938 as a third baseman. Called up as an 18-year-old, he debuted on July 21, 1939, and spent his entire major-league career (1939-1942, 1946-1954) with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, playing every position except pitcher and catcher but mostly second, short, and third. After three years in the Coast Guard (1943-1945), he returned to win The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year in 1946, batting .343 at Indianapolis. His signature season came in 1948, when he took over at second base for injured Eddie Stanky and helped spark Boston to the pennant, reaching the World Series against Cleveland. A durable utility man nicknamed "The Embroidered Man" for the roughly 75 stitches his injuries required, he retired with a .244 average, 732 hits, 27 home runs, and 260 RBI over 1,016 games. He later managed in the minors, coached the 1969 Seattle Pilots, appeared in the 1984 film "The Natural" as the Pirates manager, and was inducted into the Boston Braves Hall of Fame in 1994.
