About Andy Bershak
Andy Bershak was the finest end of North Carolina's prewar era, a two-way star from 1935 to 1937 on Tar Heel teams that compiled a 23-4-1 record. The team's top receiver and a brilliant defender, he earned second-team All-America notice in 1936, made first-team All-Southern Conference twice, and in 1937 became a consensus All-American. Bershak also started for Carolina's basketball team, and the university gave him its 1938 Patterson Medal. The Detroit Lions drafted him in 1938, but he stayed in Chapel Hill instead, working as an assistant coach and scout for the football program. His life ended early: Bershak died of nephritis in his hometown of Clairton, Pennsylvania, in November 1943, at just 28. North Carolina retired his No. 59, and the number stays enshrined at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
