About Bob Higgins
Bob Higgins holds a rare double place in Penn State history, starring as an end before becoming the school's long-serving head coach. He earned All-America honors in 1915, left to serve as a U.S. Army officer in France during World War I, then returned to be named an All-American again in 1919, playing on Nittany Lions teams that went 28-8-1 across his four varsity seasons. After two seasons of pro ball with the Canton Bulldogs and coaching stops at West Virginia Wesleyan and Washington University, Higgins returned to his alma mater and served as Penn State's head coach from 1930 through 1948, going 91-57-11 over nineteen seasons. His 1947 club produced just the second unbeaten, untied regular season in school history and tied SMU 13-13 in the Cotton Bowl, only Penn State's second bowl appearance. Failing health ended his coaching career in 1948, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
