About John Kimbrough

John Kimbrough powered Texas A&M's greatest era from 1938 to 1940, a 210-pound fullback whose powerful, high-knee running style made him an All-American in both 1939 and 1940. The Aggies went 20-1 across those two seasons. In the 14-13 Sugar Bowl win over Tulane that sealed A&M's undefeated 1939 national championship, Kimbrough pounded out 152 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns, and the next winter he helped edge Fordham 13-12 in the Cotton Bowl. He finished second to Michigan's Tom Harmon in the 1940 Heisman Trophy voting. Kimbrough starred in two Hollywood Westerns in 1942, flew as an Army Air Corps pilot in World War II, then spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference. Back home in Haskell, Texas, the man they called Jarrin' John ranched and served a term in the Texas Legislature. In 1954 he became Texas A&M's first College Football Hall of Fame inductee.
