1955 Topps All-American #3 Ed Weir

About Ed Weir
Ed Weir ranks with the greatest linemen Nebraska ever produced, a tackle who earned All-America honors in 1924 and 1925 while captaining the Cornhuskers both seasons. He made his reputation against the era's giants: Weir starred in Nebraska's 1923 defeat of the Notre Dame team built around the famous Four Horsemen backfield, then in a 1925 victory over Red Grange and Illinois, and Knute Rockne called him the greatest tackle he ever saw. Weir went on to the NFL's Frankford Yellow Jackets, winning the 1926 league championship, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 1927, and finishing his stay as the team's coach. In 1929 he returned to Lincoln for good, serving as an assistant football coach, then a head track coach whose teams won ten conference titles, and finally an athletic administrator; Nebraska dedicated Ed Weir Stadium, its track facility, in 1974. A charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, he was the first Cornhusker enshrined.
