About George Sauer Sr.
George Sauer was one of Nebraska's defining players of the early 1930s, a 6-2 fullback who also handled the passing and punting for Cornhusker teams that went 23-4-1 from 1931 through 1933. He made first-team All-Big Six all three seasons and earned consensus All-America honors as a senior, then closed his college days by scoring both West touchdowns in a 12-0 East-West Shrine Game victory. Sauer played three seasons with the Green Bay Packers, starting in the backfield on the 1936 NFL championship team, before a long coaching career as head coach at New Hampshire, Kansas, Navy, and Baylor, winning conference titles in both of his Kansas years. He later became the first general manager of the AFL's New York Titans and, as a Jets executive, brought aboard his son, star receiver George Sauer Jr. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
