About Rocky Bridges

Everett Lamar "Rocky" Bridges Jr. (1927-2015) was born in Refugio, Texas, and raised in Long Beach, California, where scout Tom Downey signed him after a Brooklyn Dodgers tryout camp in 1946. He earned the nickname "Rocky" in the low minors around 1948 and later joked that he told the story of its origin "all three ways." A versatile right-handed infielder who played shortstop, second base, and third base, Bridges reached the majors with the Dodgers in 1951 and spent 11 seasons with seven clubs, including a stint with the Cincinnati Redlegs (1953-1956) shown on this card. His lone All-Star selection came in 1958, when manager Casey Stengel picked him as the token representative of the last-place Washington Senators. Over 919 games he batted .247 with 562 hits, 16 home runs, and 187 RBI. Beloved for his wisecracks and an enormous chew of tobacco, "the baggy-pants comedian of the baseball diamond" became a baseball lifer, coaching for the Angels and managing roughly 25 years in the minors, where he won more than 1,300 games. As card #324 this is a scarcer Series 4 high number in the 1956 Topps set.
