1956 Topps #325 Don Liddle

About Don Liddle
Donald Eugene Liddle (May 25, 1925 - June 5, 2000) was a left-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the Milwaukee Braves in 1953 and pitched four big-league seasons for the Braves (1953), New York Giants (1954-1956) and St. Louis Cardinals (1956). The 5-foot-10 southpaw appeared in 117 games with 54 starts, going 28-18 with a 3.75 ERA and 198 strikeouts over 427-2/3 innings. Liddle's lasting fame comes from the 1954 World Series: in Game 1 at the Polo Grounds, Giants manager Leo Durocher brought him in to face Cleveland's left-handed slugger Vic Wertz, and it was Liddle's pitch that Wertz drove to deep center field for Willie Mays' immortal over-the-shoulder grab known as "The Catch." Wertz was the only batter he faced that day, and in the clubhouse afterward Liddle famously quipped, "Well, I got my man." He earned a measure of redemption in the same Series, starting and winning the decisive Game 4 with 6-2/3 innings of one-earned-run pitching as the Giants completed a four-game sweep for the championship. This card is a Series 4 high number (#325), among the tougher-to-find cards in the 1956 Topps set.
