Dick Littlefield - 1957 Topps #346
1957 Topps #346 Dick Littlefield
Scarce fourth series: #265-352 is the tough run of the 1957 set — roughly twice as hard to find as the other series ("tough, not rare"). No documented reason survives; the best-researched account is that Topps printed the hastily assembled final series in quantity and left Series 4 with the shortest run.

About Dick Littlefield
Richard Bernard "Dick" Littlefield (1926-1997), a left-handed pitcher born in Detroit, entered pro ball in 1946 after Navy service in World War II, signed by Red Sox scout Maurice DeLoof and debuting with the Class C Oneonta Red Sox. He reached the majors in 1950 and became one of the most-traveled players of the pre-free-agency era, pitching for nine franchises over nine seasons (1950-1958): the Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Browns/Orioles, Pirates, Cardinals, Giants, Cubs, and Braves. Detroit sportswriter Hal Middlesworth dubbed him "the Marco Polo of the major leagues," and he was also called "Baseball's Leading Gypsy." He famously headlined the December 1956 trade sending him to Brooklyn for Jackie Robinson, voided when Robinson chose to retire. Littlefield finished 33-54 with a 4.71 ERA, 495 strikeouts, and nine saves in 243 games. This scarce Series Four card captures him during his lone 1957 season with the Chicago Cubs.
