Dee Fondy - 1957 Topps #42
1957 Topps #42 Dee Fondy

About Dee Fondy
A World War II Army veteran who landed on Utah Beach in 1944, Dee Fondy rose through the Brooklyn Dodgers chain — Fort Worth, Montreal, Mobile — with Gil Hodges blocking his path to first base. Acquired by Chicago, the 6-foot-3 lefty announced himself with a bases-loaded triple in his first major-league at-bat on Opening Day 1951, then manned first base for the Cubs into 1957, topping .300 three times. The same spring this card appeared, the Cubs sent Fondy and Gene Baker to Pittsburgh for Dale Long and Lee Walls; he hit .313 that season, and on September 24, 1957, he grounded out to shortstop Don Zimmer as the last man ever to bat at Ebbets Field. Fondy finished with Cincinnati in 1958, a .286 hitter with 69 home runs, then scouted for the Mets and Brewers, where he signed Paul Molitor.
