1957 Topps #43 Connie Johnson

About Connie Johnson
Clifford 'Connie' Johnson Jr. — nicknamed for his habit of singing Connie Boswell's 'Basin Street Blues' until teammates hung the name on him — entered pro ball at 17 in 1940, recruited by Olympic hero Jesse Owens for the Toledo Crawfords. Starring for the Kansas City Monarchs alongside Satchel Paige, he led the Negro American League in strikeouts in 1942, pitched in that year's East-West All-Star Game, and earned a second All-Star nod in 1950 after Army service. In 1953 he became the White Sox's first Black pitcher, and a May 1956 trade alongside George Kell sent him to Baltimore. This card catches him at his peak: in 1957 Johnson went 14-11 with a 3.20 ERA and 177 strikeouts — third in the AL — fanning 14 on September 2, the league's top single-game total that year. He finished 40-39 (3.44 ERA). Buck O'Neil insisted he 'was a great pitcher in the Negro Leagues... Could have won 20 games in the big leagues.'
