About Don Ferrarese

Donald Hugh Ferrarese (June 19, 1929 - November 4, 2024) was a left-handed pitcher, born in Oakland, California, who turned pro in 1948 and reached the majors in 1955. A slight 5-foot-9 lefty who batted right, he was nicknamed "Midget." He debuted with the Baltimore Orioles on April 11, 1955, and it was in Baltimore that he authored his signature efforts: on May 5, 1956, he struck out 13 Cleveland batters in a 2-1 complete-game loss, and on May 12, 1956, he carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the New York Yankees before Andy Carey broke it up, settling for a two-hit shutout. Ferrarese pitched for the Orioles (1955-57), Cleveland Indians (1958-59), Chicago White Sox (1960), Philadelphia Phillies (1961-62) and St. Louis Cardinals (1962). On May 26, 1959, he smacked three doubles in one game off White Sox starter Dick Donovan. He was never an All-Star, finishing 19-36 with a 4.00 ERA and 350 strikeouts. This 1957 Topps card captures him during his Orioles years.
